Exploring Sydney: Mitchell

Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom! We've spent 4 days exploring Sydney - here's an update. When we got to Sydney, Australia, we were very tired from our 10-hour flight from Seoul, so we took a rest at the Sydney Central YHA, our hostel.

After that, we did a walking tour through downtown Sydney. We saw many parks and gardens like the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Government House gardens (a garden in front of a government house we were not allowed into), and Hyde Park. We also saw the famous Sydney Opera House and crossed the Harbor Bridge. We really liked the Sydney Opera House a lot because of the design. The architect was peeling an orange and he got the idea for the shape of Sydney Opera House. I thought it kind of looks likes sails on a boat or seashells.

We also went to different neighborhoods like Paddington, the Rocks, King’s Cross, and the Glebe! Yes, the Glebe. Sounds familiar. At The Rocks, we walked around a lot and had a refreshing drink at a rooftop restaurant called the Glenmore Hotel. It was overlooking the Sydney Harbour with views of the whole harbour and the Opera House.

Friday was another day for exploring the Sydney area. We went by ferry to Manly Beach. I liked it because it was a nice place away from the main area of Sydney and because the beaches were nice. They had big waves with lots of surfers. We got there and we looked at the shops and the area with nice old buildings. After exploring, we did a short hike to Shelley Beach and Jackson and I swam for a while in the Pacific Ocean. We had dinner there and took the evening ferry back to Sydney. Seeing the harbour all lit up was pretty cool.

On Saturday morning, we visited the Glebe Market and looked for a mother’s day gift. Afterwards, we went to Observatory Hill, with great views, and the observatory itself, which was very interesting.

Today we are leaving Sydney, and flying to Cairns to pick up our camper van, which we will be using to travel down along the east coast of Australia. I am looking forward to camping and seeing lots of Queensland and NSW.
